The only time it made sense was when Kieran wouldn’t stay behind when she went to free Cas. Sometimes I find in these stories that the reality of lifespans isn’t taken into account properly. Of course they have been through so much together, and with the notam and all that I know his loyalty has changed, but he has known Cas for 200 years. Also I felt this book made it like Kieran was closer to Poppy then to Casteel and maybe just cuz I LOVE the guys relationship this was just something that didn’t work for me.

Holding hands a lot or him moving her hair behind her ear, even when Casteel was there, to me just didn’t make sense for the characters. I agree that it wasn’t emotional cheating or anything and the joining didn’t bother me either but I didn’t like the progression of Poppy and Kieran’s relationship in this book. No one is claiming that her writing deserves a Pulitzer. If anything, he was thinking of his memories with his best friend and he wasn’t ready to share that with Poppy while Cas was still in captivity. He sent that memory to her to freak her out so she’d stop rooting through his memories more than anything else. So for him to have watched her and Cas, wasn’t weird at all. Not to mention both the Wolven and Atlantian cultures are very open and sexually fluid. If it wasn’t for Kieran calling them both on their bullshit, they’d still be pretending they didn’t love each other. Who has been there for both of them in unimaginable ways. The joining experience was fueled by high emotions and risk of them losing their best friend, but the person the both trust the most. Kieran has literally been in the same room with them when they had sex on multiple occasions and Poppy has even fed from him in the past. Like anyone who says this is weird, I feel like they haven’t read the other books recently. Cas is even comforted by the fact that she has Kieran while he’s in captivity and it increases his panic when he finds out Poppy and Kieran are in Carsadonia. So when Cas was taken and Poppy was a wreck, Kieran was there for her. They were legitimately bonded to each other for YEARS. I feel like Cas and Kieran love each other in a very unique way and that’s translated to how Poppy feels about Kieran.

As for the joining, it was confusing and I wish JLA would have just said who was doing what but it didn't disappoint just maybe wasn't as fulfilling as it could have been. I think that poppy, Cas, and Kieran are connected with the two people they each love most in the world and there is nothing wrong with that. I loved the relationship development between all of them. They tether each other to one another in different ways creating the unique love explained throughout the book. As for poppy's side, it was the love Cas had for Kieran and the trust she build with Kieran over time. I think the emotional development that occurred was a product of the love Kieran had for Cas and of his bond to Poppy. I see so many claim that poppy was 'emotionally cheating' but I completely disagree. It created that love that is cross between family love and passionate love between the three of them. I think it would have happened whether Cas was there or not, if anything it's as if the bond that Cas and Kieran had (not the bond at birth) was harmonized into the bond that poppy had with Kieran. I may be alone or in the minority on this opinion, but I loved the unique bond Poppy and Kieran built. I feel that people aren't considering the overall relationship development between each character over the past four books and then contributing those changes to the many outcomes in this book. The joining and the more developed relationships between characters.
